NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF ETHIOPIA
The
National Archives, established in 1979 at main division level, began its
function by receiving government archives from the Ministry Of the Grand Palace,
Palace of the Crown prince, and from others. Some of the archives collected by
the National Archive are letters written by:

- Emperor Thewodros to Unknown individual
Emperor
Thewodros stated the attempt he made to civilize the nation, but to no avail.
Likewise, despite his whim to get victorious over Habesha enemies and drive the
Turks and conquer Jerusalem, his army fled and made him lose the war against the
British, a country with a well-trained and disciplined army.

Subject: - Emperor Yohannes IV to Queen Victoria
Emperor
Yohannes noted the trouble Ismail Pasha caused in attempting to block
Ethiopia’s foreign relation (correspondence) and making a move to invade same
of the territories, which abruptly ended, the instant he lost the war.

Subject: - Emperor Menlik II to King Nicholas II of Russia
Emperor
Menlik II in his letter underscored the Wuchale Treaty b/n Ethiopia and Italy
signed to further strengthen their peaceful cooperation; nevertheless, the
failure on the part of Italy to be abided by the Treaty and its intrigue to use
Article 17 as a pretext to colonize Ethiopia made him wage war and ascertain the
country’s sovereignty.

A letter sent from Lij Iyassu to W/r Mentiwab regarding
his gift of 72 hectares of land to Addis Alem St. Mary Church.
